What can Hypnotherapy help with?

Common Misconceptions about Hypnotherapy
Many common misperceptions, fearful beliefs and unrealistic expectations about hypnosis and hypnotherapy abound, leading some to hold back who could benefit, and giving others inflated ideas of their therapist's ability to make magical things happen. Here's a short list, and if you come up with any more I'd love to hear about them.
Belief #1. A hypnotherapist can control a client. Hypnotic trances are a consensual state. At all times you are in control, able to choose whether to reject or accept a suggestion. At no time could you be made to act against your own self-interest or to violate your own code of ethics, to disclose a secret that you'd rather keep secret, or to remember something from your past that your unconscious mind has "forgotten" as a way to protect you. In addition, in our sessions, I will show you how at any time if you feel uncomfortable you can bring yourself up and out of the trance into normal waking consciousness,
Belief #2. A hypnotherapist can do the work for the client. This probably comes from the apparent ease with which remarkable results can be achieved while in a pleasurable trance state. Any benefits come from a shift in the client's perspective, and this shift depends on their readiness, the degree to which they trust the therapist, and the degree to which the changes are perceived by the inner mind as desirable and don't threaten their values or self-interest. A good therapist can help a client access their own power to change, but the client does the work.
Belief #3. "I can't be hypnotized." If you are reading this and receiving meaning from it, you are using the same capacities that are being utilized in therapeutic trance states. In fact, some would suggest that in what we call our ordinary waking consciousness, we are constantly moving from one trance state to another, and a therapeutic approach to trance work simply assists the client in more deliberately choosing which trances to cultivate and maintain so that they are happening to their own life, rather than having their life happen to them.
